TARGET AUDIENCE

Primary Care Practitioners, Family Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Psychologists, Pharmacists, Social Workers, Rehab Therapists, Specialists, Residents, Students, and other Health Care Professionals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the end of this learning activity the learners will be able to:

  • Strengthen and develop assessment and diagnostic skills related to numerous mental health concerns throughout the lifespan.
  • Formulate comprehensive treatment plans utilizing a variety of therapeutic strategies, including pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.
  • Become aware of the latest clinical practice guidelines specific to each mental health concern addressed during this educational event.
  • Identify the mental health needs of specific populations (e.g, women, Indigenous Peoples, the elderly, children) and know how to best meet those needs.
  • Be familiar with local, provincial and national resources, including online resources, specific to mental health concerns.
  • Know when a referral for a specialty assessment or tertiary care should be made.
  • Appreciate that the provisions of excellent mental health care requires a multidisciplinary effort, whenever possible.
  • Learn how to assess for burnout in self and others and identify ways to minimize risk.

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Explain the epidemiology of mood disorders in children and adolescents
  2. Assess for the diagnostic criteria, and identify the common clinical presentation of mood disorders in children and adolescents 
  3. Describe and apply therapeutic options, utilizing current treatment guidelines

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Identify common comorbidities that limit response to treatment of depression
  2. Describe and apply current best pharmacological practices in treating depression 
  3. Deliver CBT to patients in your practice, effectively, and without training

Bipolar Disorder in Adults

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Utilize diagnostic criteria to assess for Bipolar Disorders using and be able to rule out other differential diagnoses for Bipolar Disorders

  3. Describe and apply pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments for Bipolar Disorders

  2. Develop an understanding of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, as well as post-partum psychosis 
  3. Identify treatment options available during pregnancy and the post-partum period 
  4. Determine when and how to refer to perinatal mental health resources in the Greater Hamilton Area

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and Perimenopausal Depression

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe the diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and perimenopausal depression
  2. Treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder utilizing current treatment guidelines
  3. Manage perimenopausal depression and identify the role of hormone therapy in women who are perimenopausal

Understanding, Assessing and Managing Psychosis

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe the epidemiology, primary and differential diagnoses for a presentation of psychosis
  2. Develop a clinical approach (screening questions, work-up and management) for a presentation of psychosis
  3. Discriminate and justify a clinical approach according to treatment guidelines, and distinguishing features for presentation of psychosis (e.g. symptoms, longitudinal evolution, age, comorbid conditions, etc.)
  4. Utilize and identify resources for clinicians and patients, related to a presentation of psychosis

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe how to make a timely, respectful mind-body link for the patient
  2. Identify the range of conscious and unconscious mechanisms in somatizing
  3. Identify and apply treatment modalities for patients who somatize

Management of Benzodiazepine and Alcohol Use Disorders

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Recognize risk factors for benzodiazepine use disorder and identify problematic alcohol use
  2. List anti-craving medications and how to prescribe them to support recovery from alcohol use disorder
  3. Describe a motivational enhancement framework to assess patients’ readiness to reduce use of alcohol or benzodiazepines
  4. Describe strategies to reduce harm with benzodiazepines including tapering

Cannabis and Psychosis in Youth

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Address the psychoeducational needs of youth with first episode psychosis  secondary to cannabis use
  2. Identify risk factors for cannabis induced psychosis and conversion rates for schizophrenia and bipolar illness
  3. Identify and implement treatment approaches for cannabis-induced psychosis

Biopsychosocial Assessment and Management of Chronic Pain

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Explain the clinical presentation and epidemiology of chronic pain
  2. Describe the role of the nervous system and neuroplasticity in chronic pain
  3. Describe the biopsychosocial model of chronic pain
  4. Summarize the empirical evidence and application of cognitive-behaviour therapy for chronic pain

What’s up with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

By attending this activity, participants will be able to: 

  1. Describe the terms and trends related to the diagnosis (and differential diagnosis) of this neurodevelopmental disorder
  2. Identify core features of ASD and heterogeneity (e.g. etiologies, presentations, developmental implications)
  3. Implement management strategies focused on helping patients with ASD (and families) through formulation and tailored interventions
  4. Identify local resources and know when to refer to the appropriate services
